Sheikh Hasina Calls for Release of Arrested Hindu Monk Chinmoy Krishna Das, Condemns Interim Government

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has condemned the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das, calling it “unjust” and demanding his immediate release. Das was taken into custody for allegedly hoisting a saffron flag above the Bangladesh national flag during a rally in October, sparking outrage and protests among religious and ethnic minorities.

In a statement shared by the Awami League on X (formerly Twitter), Hasina said, “A top leader of the Sanatan Dharma community has been unjustly arrested, and he must be released immediately. Religious freedom and the security of life and property for people of all communities must be ensured.” She also highlighted reports of escalating violence against minorities, including attacks on temples in Chittagong and vandalism targeting mosques, churches, and Ahmadiyya community properties.

Violence and Unrest Post-Ouster

Hasina, who was ousted from power in August amid student protests over government job reservations, fled to New Delhi after resigning. In her statement, she accused the interim government, led by economist Muhammad Yunus, of failing to protect citizens and violating human rights.

“A lawyer was brutally killed in Chittagong. This is an act of terrorism, and those responsible must be brought to justice,” Hasina said, adding that the government would also face consequences if it failed to act.

She further called on citizens to unite against what she described as “terrorism and militancy,” urging immediate action to safeguard the lives and properties of minorities and the general public.

India’s Reaction

India has condemned Das’s arrest, emphasizing the long-standing issues faced by minorities in Bangladesh. In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed concern over the detention of Das and the attacks on those protesting peacefully against it.

“It is unfortunate that while the perpetrators of arson and desecration of deities remain at large, charges are being pressed against a religious leader presenting legitimate demands through peaceful gatherings,” the MEA said.

Background of Arrest

Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested on Monday following a complaint filed by Md. Feroze Khan, accusing Das and 18 others of disrespecting the national flag during a rally. The incident has intensified scrutiny of the interim government’s handling of communal tensions and its approach to human rights.

As violence and unrest continue, calls for accountability and the protection of minority communities grow louder within and outside Bangladesh.
