Kashmir is experiencing an unprecedented heatwave, with several locations in the valley recording their highest July temperatures in 25 years. According to the meteorological office, Srinagar city hit a sweltering high of 36.2 degrees Celsius on Sunday. This marks the hottest July day since July 9, 1999, when temperatures reached 37 degrees Celsius.
Srinagar’s record high for July dates back to July 10, 1946, when the mercury soared to 38.3 degrees Celsius. On Sunday, both Qazigund and Kokernag towns in south Kashmir also reported their highest July temperatures. Qazigund saw a maximum temperature of 35.6 degrees Celsius, surpassing its previous record of 34.5 degrees Celsius set on July 11, 1988. In Kokernag, temperatures climbed to 34.1 degrees Celsius, exceeding its previous high of 33.3 degrees Celsius recorded earlier this year on July 3.
Historically, Kokernag had reached 33 degrees Celsius only once before, on July 8, 1993.
