In a swift and heroic operation, the Indian Coast Guard successfully rescued 182 pilgrims who were stranded on a grounded ferry near Namkhana in Kakdwip, South 24 Paraganas, West Bengal. The incident occurred as the pilgrims were returning from the annual ‘Ganga Sagar Mela’ after taking a holy dip on Makar Sankranti. The ferry, identified as ‘MV Swasthya Sathi,’ ran aground due to extremely poor visibility.
The rescue mission was initiated following an alert from the District Magistrate of South 24 Paraganas at 5:30 am. The Coast Guard’s operations team promptly deployed two Air Cushion Vehicles (ACVs), also known as Hovercraft, from Haldia and Sagar Island to the stranded ferry’s location.
Upon reaching the scene at approximately 8:40 am, the Coast Guard team assessed the situation and formulated an evacuation plan. Simultaneously, a Coast Guard team approached the stranded vessel to reassure the pilgrims and briefed them about the evacuation process. The hovercrafts commenced the evacuation at 8:50 am, transporting the individuals to the nearest point at Lot no 8 jetty in Kakdwip. The entire operation, rescuing 182 pilgrims, was successfully completed by 11:00 am.
Following the evacuation, the ferry, guided by the ACVs, floated during high water and moved with the remaining pilgrims towards a safe destination.
The ‘Ganga Sagar Mela’ is an annual Hindu festival held at Gangasagar in West Bengal, coinciding with Makar Sankranti. The event, which commenced on January 8 this year, attracts spiritual devotees who participate in the ritualistic dip in the holy waters of the Ganges at Sagardwip, where it converges with the Bay of Bengal.
To ensure the safety and security of participants in the ‘Ganga Sagar Mela,’ the Indian Coast Guard strategically deploys maritime units. A rapid lifesaving action team, equipped with divers and a Gemini boat, is stationed at the Mela site to respond promptly to unforeseen events. Additionally, an officer from the Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Frazerganj is positioned at Sagar Island to coordinate with state authorities and oversee safety and security along the seafront.
This successful rescue operation once again highlights the Indian Coast Guard’s commitment to safeguarding lives in challenging maritime situations, showcasing their preparedness and efficiency in responding to emergencies.
