India-Sri Lanka Ferry Service: A "Truly Big Step" for People-to-People Contacts, Says S Jaishankar

The inauguration of a passenger ferry service from Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam to Kankesanthurai near Jaffna in Sri Lanka represents a “truly big step” in fostering people-to-people interactions, according to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. In a virtual ceremony commemorating the launch of the ferry service, Jaishankar highlighted India’s expansive and forward-thinking approach towards its neighboring nations, emphasizing the priorities of connectivity, cooperation, and contacts.

Jaishankar expressed India’s broader vision, stating, “In the future, we are looking at grid connections, pipelines, economic corridors, and support for all in Sri Lanka to live in equal dignity and equal rights.” India has consistently urged Sri Lanka to fulfill the aspirations of the Tamil community within the island nation and ensure a life characterized by respect and dignity.

The high-speed ferry, operated by the Shipping Corporation of India, has a passenger capacity of 150. Covering a distance of approximately 60 nautical miles (110 kilometers) between Nagapattinam and Kankesanthurai, the ferry journey is expected to take around 3.5 hours, depending on sea conditions.

Jaishankar also underscored India’s ‘Neighbourhood First policy’ and the focus on enhancing connectivity and cooperation with its neighboring countries. He cited the Chennai-Jaffna flights, approved by Prime Minister Modi, as an example of India’s commitment to regional ties.

The External Affairs Minister praised Prime Minister Modi’s personal commitment to the welfare of the people in Sri Lanka, emphasizing Modi’s status as the first Indian prime minister to visit Jaffna. India’s dedication is further evident through its support for housing projects, cultural centers, and hospitals in Sri Lanka.

Referring to India’s ‘Security and Growth For All in the Region’ (SAGAR) policy, Jaishankar highlighted India’s active role in ensuring maritime security and safety, disaster response, and environmental protection.

The ferry service symbolizes an essential maritime link for people-to-people connections, strengthening ties between the two countries. It also underscores India’s contributions to facilitate the smooth operation of the Kankesanthurai harbor.

Jaishankar concluded by emphasizing India’s focus on improving the quality of life for its citizens. He highlighted the ferry service’s potential to directly facilitate cargo operations, particularly benefitting small businesses and ensuring that the benefits reach all segments of society.

The launch of the India-Sri Lanka ferry service reflects India’s commitment to regional integration and cooperation, furthering the nation’s stance on enhancing connectivity and relationships with its neighboring countries.
