The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for Mumbai, indicating the likelihood of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and moderate spells of rain in isolated areas of the Mumbai suburban region. The forecast predicts gusty winds with speeds reaching 40-50 kmph, prompting the IMD to advise residents to take necessary precautions when venturing outdoors.
This alert comes after a recent incident in Ghatkopar where a massive advertising hoarding collapsed onto a petrol pump, resulting in tragic consequences. The hoarding, measuring 120×120 feet, caused the loss of 14 lives and left several others injured. Following the incident, a comprehensive search and rescue operation involving 12 fire engines and other vehicles has been ongoing since Monday afternoon.
Authorities have highlighted that the collapsed hoarding was installed illegally without proper permissions. In response to the tragedy, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the site and ordered a structural audit of all hoardings across the city to prevent such incidents in the future.
The police have taken action by registering a case against the owner of Ego Media, Bhavesh Bhinde, and others involved in installing the unauthorized hoarding. Charges under sections 304, 338, and 337 of the Indian Penal Code have been filed, reflecting the gravity of the incident and the legal consequences faced by those responsible.
