Indian Air Force (IAF) Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is poised to make history as the first Indian astronaut to travel to the International Space Station (ISS). Shukla, who has been designated as the pilot of the Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), will embark on a spaceflight aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft in Spring 2025. This mission, a collaboration between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), marks a significant milestone in India’s space exploration journey.
A Career in Aviation and Space Exploration
Born on October 10, 1985, in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Shubhanshu Shukla joined the IAF in June 2006, where he was commissioned into the fighter wing. A seasoned combat leader and test pilot, Shukla boasts over 2,000 hours of flight experience across several aircraft, including the Su-30 MKI, MiG-21, MiG-29, Jaguar, Hawk, Dornier, and An-32. His stellar service in the IAF earned him the rank of Group Captain in March 2024.
In addition to his role as an experienced pilot, Shukla is also one of the astronaut-designates for India’s Gaganyaan mission, which is expected to carry Indian astronauts to space in the near future.
The Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4)
The Axiom Mission 4 will be a historic milestone not just for India, but also for other participating countries like Poland and Hungary. This mission will mark Poland’s and Hungary’s first government-sponsored spaceflights in over 40 years and will be the first time all three nations—India, Poland, and Hungary—will execute a mission aboard the ISS.
Shubhanshu Shukla will join former NASA astronaut and Axiom Space’s Director of Human Spaceflight, Peggy Whitson, who will command the mission. The two other mission specialists are European Space Agency astronaut Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland and Tibor Kapu from Hungary. The astronauts are scheduled to spend up to 14 days aboard the ISS, conducting various activities, including scientific research, outreach, and commercial endeavors.
Shukla’s Anticipation and Preparations
In an exclusive statement, Shubhanshu Shukla expressed his excitement to share his journey with “Bharatvaasis” and mentioned plans to carry items representing India on his spaceflight. He also hopes to perform yoga poses aboard the ISS, symbolizing the cultural connection between India and space exploration.
Shukla’s journey to space is the culmination of years of rigorous training, including a year-long preparation at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Russia. In 2019, Shukla received a call from ISRO, setting the stage for his future in space exploration. He follows in the footsteps of Rakesh Sharma, India’s first astronaut, who made history aboard the Soviet Soyuz T-11 mission in 1984.
A Significant Step for Indian Space Exploration
The Ax-4 mission is a groundbreaking achievement for Shubhanshu Shukla and India’s space program. His spaceflight aboard the ISS, along with the joint participation of Poland and Hungary, highlights the growing international collaboration in space exploration. With India’s Gaganyaan mission also on the horizon, Shukla’s mission symbolizes the country’s expanding capabilities and ambition in space exploration.
As the countdown to Shubhanshu Shukla’s spaceflight continues, all eyes will be on the IAF officer as he embarks on this historic journey, carrying with him the pride of a nation and the aspirations of millions of Indians looking to make their mark on the world stage of space exploration.
