In a dramatic turn of events, Hemant Soren is poised to reclaim his position as Chief Minister of Jharkhand following his bail in a money laundering case, which had prompted his resignation earlier this year. The decision, made by the alliance of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Congress, and RJD, has sparked controversy within the party ranks.
Hemant Soren, who stepped down from the chief ministerial post in January amidst legal troubles, has been granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court last week, asserting doubts over the allegations against him. This development paved the way for his reinstatement, despite initial opposition within his party.
Champai Soren, who had assumed office in Hemant Soren’s absence, expressed discontent over the decision to replace him. Sources revealed that Champai Soren, feeling “insulted” by the move, may resign from his position as Chief Minister and could be appointed as JMM’s executive president instead.
The decision to reinstate Hemant Soren was finalized during a meeting at Champai Soren’s residence, attended by key leaders of the ruling coalition, including Congress’ Jharkhand in-charge Ghulam Ahmad Mir and state president Rajesh Thakur. The meeting concluded amidst speculation and cancellation of Chief Minister Champai Soren’s scheduled programs earlier today.
Political analysts predict that Hemant Soren’s return as Chief Minister, ahead of upcoming elections in Jharkhand, could galvanize the opposition BJP’s campaign. Nishikant Dubey, BJP MP from Godda, took to social media to criticize the move, citing it as a reinforcement of dynasty politics within the JMM.
Champai Soren, a stalwart within the JMM and a longtime associate of party founder Shibu Soren, previously served as a cabinet minister in Hemant Soren’s administration. His potential resignation signifies a significant shift within the party dynamics, potentially impacting the JMM’s electoral strategy moving forward.
