A MIG 29K fighter jet encountered a tire burst on the taxiway at Goa Airport, leading to significant disruptions in operations. The incident, occurring during the Navy’s operational hours, prompted the closure of the runway for nearly two hours. This resulted in the diversion and delay of at least sixteen flights, according to airport officials.
The mishap took place within the timeframe designated for Navy operations at the airport, which operates between 8:30 am and 12:30 pm for sorties and exercises. The MIG 29K jet, part of the aircraft carrier variant stationed at the Goa INS Hansa naval base, found itself stranded on the taxiway due to the tire burst.
Authorities swiftly responded, closing the runway until the disabled aircraft could be removed with the assistance of a crane. During this closure, one flight was diverted to the Mopa International Airport, while several others faced delays and were directed to return to their respective home airports.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the tire burst incident. The Airports Authority of India (AAI), responsible for managing the civilian terminal, confirmed the runway’s closure until approximately 3:30 pm, affecting the scheduled landing of at least sixteen flights.
The incident impacted the afternoon rush at Goa’s Dabolim airport, a period known for increased civilian air traffic. Following the removal of the disabled aircraft, operations resumed for civilian flights at 3:52 pm.
This occurrence highlights the shared runway dynamics between the Goa civilian airport and the Navy, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts to minimize disruptions during overlapping operational hours.
The investigation into the cause of the tire burst incident remains ongoing as authorities work to ensure the safety and efficiency of operations at the Goa Airport.
