A gathering of farmers at the Chandigarh-Mohali border persists as they rally to push for their demands, notably seeking a legal assurance for the Minimum Support Price (MSP) among other concerns from the central government. Under the banner of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), the protest spanning three days witnessed an assembly of farmers, pressing for their requisites.
In continuation of their protest on the second day, farmer leaders have announced their plan to meet the Punjab governor on Tuesday. The aims encompass various demands, encompassing legalizing MSP, withdrawal of cases filed during the 2020-21 agitation, compensation and employment for families of deceased farmers, debt waivers, and pension provisions.
Harmeet Singh Kadian, a prominent farmer leader, conveyed the intent to present their memorandum to the governor on Tuesday at 11 am.
The course of action following this meeting will be decided by the SKM leaders, as reiterated by representatives of various farmers’ organizations, including Bharti Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan), BKU (Lakhowal), and BKU (Dakunda), which are active participants in the SKM coalition.
The protest has garnered participation from farmers in Haryana, converging at Sector 5 in Panchkula, prompting heavy security measures and traffic diversions along select routes due to the demonstrations.
At the Mohali-Chandigarh border, farmers from Punjab have established a presence with essential supplies, erecting tents and setting up a central stage for leaders to address the demonstrators. The heightened security measures deployed by Punjab and Chandigarh Police include barricades and water cannons, reflecting the seriousness surrounding the protest.
The Chandigarh and Mohali police have issued traffic advisories as the protest continues, ensuring public safety amid the ongoing demonstrations.
