Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency Inches Towards ₹20 Crore at the Box Office

Kangana Ranaut’s political drama Emergency, which hit theatres on January 17, is steadily approaching the ₹20 crore mark in its 11-day run. According to reports from Sacnilk, the film earned ₹20 lakhs on its second Monday (January 27), bringing its total box office collection to ₹16.90 crore.

A Mixed Box Office Journey

Emergency marked Kangana Ranaut’s highest opening in the last five years, raking in ₹2.35 crore on its debut day. However, the movie’s box office performance saw a dip from Day 2 onward. On Day 11, the film had an overall occupancy rate of 7.21 percent in the Hindi market.

In comparison to Kangana’s other recent projects, Emergency surpassed the opening figures of Tejas (₹1.25 crore in 2023) and Dhaakad (₹1.20 crore in 2022). It also outperformed her 2021 film Thalaivii (₹1.46 crore) and came close to her 2020 sports drama Panga, which opened at ₹2.70 crore.

About Emergency

Directed and co-produced by Kangana Ranaut, Emergency features the actress in the role of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The movie boasts a strong ensemble cast, including Anupam Kher, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhry, Ashok Chhabra, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik in pivotal roles.

Set during the Emergency period in India from 1975 to 1977, the film delves into an era of suspended civil liberties, strict press censorship, and a turbulent political landscape.

Speaking about the film, Kangana Ranaut clarified in an interview that Emergency is not a political film but rather a story about a historical episode. She said, “It has nothing to do with politics… Eventually, it is not about any party. You will come out feeling enlightened about that episode.”

A Look at the Competition

Despite being a high-profile project, Emergency has faced tough competition at the box office, resulting in a gradual collection trajectory. Nevertheless, it remains one of Kangana’s most notable recent performances, offering a thought-provoking portrayal of a critical chapter in India’s history.

With Emergency continuing its theatrical run, fans and critics alike await to see if it can cross the ₹20 crore milestone in the coming days.
