In a tragic incident, an elderly, visually challenged couple in Hyderabad lived with the body of their 30-year-old son for four days, unaware that he had passed away. The harrowing situation came to light when neighbors in the Blinds Colony noticed a foul smell emanating from the couple’s rented apartment and alerted the police on Monday.
The couple, Kaluva Ramana, a retired government employee, and his wife, Shantikumari, both over 60 years old, attempted to call out to their son, Pramod, for food and water, but received no response. According to police, their frail voices likely went unheard by neighbors, contributing to the distressing situation.
Pramod, who had been deserted by his wife along with their two daughters, struggled with alcoholism. Police officials revealed that he likely died in his sleep four to five days prior to the discovery. Station head officer of Nagole police station, Surya Nayak, stated that Ramana and Shantikumari were found in a semi-conscious state when police arrived.
Upon their rescue, the couple was provided with food and water. Authorities have sent Pramod’s body for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
This heart-wrenching case highlights the vulnerabilities faced by elderly individuals, particularly those with disabilities, and the crucial role that community awareness plays in ensuring their safety and well-being. Neighbors expressed their concern for the couple, emphasizing the need for support and vigilance in such communities.
