Tamil Nadu’s anti-corruption agency, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), made a significant breakthrough on Friday, apprehending Ankit Tiwari, an Enforcement Directorate (ED) officer, in connection with a bribery scandal. Tiwari was caught red-handed by the DVAC allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹20 lakh from a doctor based in Dindigul. An official speaking on the condition of anonymity disclosed this development.
The state government source revealed that Tiwari, alongside his team, purportedly engaged in coercive practices, using threats to extort bribes for expediting the closure of cases linked to the Enforcement Directorate.
DVAC, in collaboration with Dindigul police, orchestrated the arrest of Tiwari. The interrogation of the accused is currently underway to unravel further details surrounding the case.
This event unfolds against the backdrop of the Tamil Nadu government’s accusations against the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Union government. Allegations surfaced, accusing the Centre of utilizing agencies such as the ED and Income Tax department to intimidate officials and elected representatives in the lead-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
As of now, there has been no formal response from the ED officials regarding the incident.
