Light Rain in Delhi as Mercury Rises Slightly

Delhi experienced a slight increase in temperature on Saturday while continuing to receive light rain in various parts of the city. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperature for the day was recorded at 35.5°C, marginally higher than the previous day’s 35.2°C. The minimum temperature was logged at 27.2°C, up from Friday’s 25.3°C.

The IMD forecasts predict that temperatures in Delhi will remain around 36°C for the next few days, with minimums expected to hover around 27°C. The department has not issued any alerts for the upcoming week, though very light rain or drizzle is expected from Sunday to Tuesday.

On Saturday, the IMD reported generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain and thundershowers across various locations in the city. Safdarjung, a key weather station in Delhi, recorded 5.7mm of rain in the 24-hour period until 8:30 am and trace amounts later in the day. Other weather stations also recorded varying amounts of rainfall: Palam saw 10.5mm, Lodhi Road had trace amounts and 0.5mm later, while Ridge recorded a total of 4.1mm.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) reported waterlogging at 13 locations and incidents of tree falls at four locations between 6 am and 2 pm on Saturday. Initially, no alerts were issued, but the IMD later updated the forecast to a yellow alert. The IMD has not issued further alerts through next Friday but anticipates light rain and thunderstorms later in the week.

Delhi’s air quality remained in the “satisfactory” category, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 74 at 4 pm, up from Friday’s 64. The Air Quality Early Warning System (AQEWS) forecasts that the air quality will remain satisfactory until August 20, with a potential shift to the “moderate” category in the following days.
