The controversy surrounding the Delhi Chief Minister’s bungalow at 6 Flag Staff Road has escalated ahead of the assembly elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and its leader, Arvind Kejriwal, of using taxpayer money to fund opulent renovations, dubbing the property a “sheesh mahal” (palace of mirrors).
BJP’s Allegations
Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva took to social media to share visuals of the bungalow, alleging that public funds were misused to transform it into a “7-Star Resort.” According to Sachdeva, the bungalow features amenities such as a gym, sauna, and jacuzzi, with the renovation costs pegged at ₹3.75 crore.
- Breakdown of Expenses:
- Marble granite lighting: ₹1.9 crore
- Civil work: ₹1.5 crore
- Gym and spa fittings: ₹35 lakh
The BJP questioned Kejriwal’s “aam aadmi” (common man) persona, accusing him of betraying his promises of simple living. Sachdeva criticized Kejriwal, saying, “He has built a luxury palace for himself while taxpayers struggle with rising costs and inadequate facilities.”
AAP’s Response
AAP leaders dismissed the allegations as “baseless propaganda” aimed at diverting attention from pressing issues. Former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said, “While the BJP focuses on Kejriwal’s former official residence, the public is concerned about education and health reforms.” He accused the BJP of failing to address critical issues in states like Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
AAP also defended Kejriwal’s tenure, highlighting his government’s efforts in improving education, healthcare, and public infrastructure in Delhi.
Past Allegations and Investigations
The BJP has previously accused AAP of irregularities in the renovation, alleging that over ₹45 crore of taxpayers’ money was spent. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) initiated an inquiry in September to probe alleged tender violations during the bungalow’s construction. However, a formal case has not yet been registered as the inquiry is ongoing.
Political Ramifications
The ongoing spat between the BJP and AAP underscores the heightened tensions ahead of the Delhi assembly elections. While the BJP seeks to spotlight alleged extravagance, AAP aims to shift focus to its governance record, particularly in sectors like education and healthcare.
