In a significant political development, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi Marlena has been chosen as the next Chief Minister of Delhi. The decision comes two days after Arvind Kejriwal’s unexpected announcement to step down from the role. The transition is set to take place after Mr. Kejriwal submits his resignation to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena.
During a meeting held today with AAP legislators, the party unanimously agreed to elect Atishi as the new Chief Minister. The proposal was initially put forward by senior AAP leader Dilip Pandey, allowing Kejriwal to select his successor. When Mr. Kejriwal proposed Atishi’s name, all AAP MLAs stood in support, cementing her leadership role.
Atishi, who has been a key figure in Delhi’s government, currently holds vital portfolios including Education and Public Works Department. An Oxford University alumna and Rhodes Scholar, Atishi has played a critical role in shaping the capital’s renowned education reforms, a flagship initiative of the AAP government.
Her leadership ascent began when she became the MLA for Kalkaji and later took on ministerial responsibilities after Manish Sisodia was arrested in connection with a corruption case linked to Delhi’s now-scrapped liquor policy. Atishi has also been a prominent spokesperson for the party, especially during times when both Kejriwal and Sisodia were unavailable due to legal issues.
Speaking to the media following the announcement, Atishi expressed her gratitude toward her mentor. “Arvind Kejriwal has trusted me and given me this responsibility. I appeal to the people of Delhi to make your son, your brother Arvind Kejriwal the Chief Minister again because he is honest,” she stated, signaling her intention to work closely with Kejriwal as elections approach.
Kejriwal’s decision to step down as Chief Minister, announced two days ago, took political circles by surprise. Addressing party workers on Sunday, he said, “I will not sit on that chair till the people announce their verdict.” He also emphasized his belief in gaining justice through the public mandate, referring to the upcoming Delhi assembly elections, which are scheduled for February.
Kejriwal’s resignation follows his release on bail by the Supreme Court in a corruption case tied to the now-canceled liquor policy. Both Kejriwal and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia have expressed their intent to seek public support before taking any government positions again.
