Lucknow, known for its rich historical heritage, is poised for a significant transformation in its industrial profile as Ashok Leyland, a leading commercial vehicles manufacturer, gears up to establish its electric bus manufacturing unit in the city. This groundbreaking initiative, set to commence with a ceremony on February 19, aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of fostering economic growth through substantial investments.
Ashok Leyland’s decision to set up its unit on a portion of the land previously occupied by the now-defunct Scooters India Limited (SIL) heralds a new era in Lucknow’s industrial landscape. Once home to the iconic Vijay Super scooter, the land now holds promise for cutting-edge electric vehicle manufacturing.
With nearly 70 acres allocated for this venture out of the total 140-acre SIL land, Ashok Leyland plans to inject an initial investment ranging from ₹200 to ₹500 crore for the first phase of development. Industry insiders indicate that the company is poised to further bolster its commitment with an additional ₹1000 crore investment in subsequent phases, signifying a significant vote of confidence in the city’s potential as an industrial hub.
Confirming Ashok Leyland’s participation in the upcoming groundbreaking ceremony, Manoj Kumar Singh, the infrastructure and industrial development commissioner (IIDC), shed light on the broader vision of leveraging this initiative to foster an Electric Vehicle (EV) Park on the remaining SIL land. This holistic approach underscores the state government’s commitment to nurturing an ecosystem conducive to technological innovation and sustainable development.
Among the array of companies shortlisted for the ceremony, Yamaha emerges as another automotive player slated to contribute to Lucknow’s industrial resurgence. While specifics about Yamaha’s project remain scarce, its inclusion underscores the city’s appeal as a destination for automotive investment.
Beyond the automotive sector, the ceremony will witness the participation of prominent entities such as the Hiranandani group’s NIDP Developers Private Limited, Sify Technologies, and STT Global, slated to establish data centers across Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, a host of companies in the energy sector, including NTPC, Greenko Group, Torrent Power, ACME Group, and JSW Energy, are set to unveil ambitious projects, underscoring the diverse investment potential in the region.
As preparations for the groundbreaking ceremony gain momentum, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is expected to review the arrangements at a high-level meeting scheduled for Tuesday, underscoring the government’s proactive stance in facilitating this transformative endeavor. The event not only symbolizes a significant milestone in Lucknow’s industrial evolution but also serves as a testament to the city’s resilience and adaptability in embracing future-forward technologies and economic opportunities.
