Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed a recent security audit carried out by security forces along the border areas of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on Wednesday. The review focused on strengthening security measures, particularly targeting infiltration and terrorism in the region. Shah emphasized that all security agencies should aim for a “zero infiltration” goal starting this year.
A senior official revealed that the Home Minister had instructed agencies to intensify efforts in combating terrorism and ensure better coordination between various forces managing the security grid of Jammu and Kashmir. According to the official, there has been noticeable improvement in synergy among the forces, resulting in successful efforts to thwart infiltration attempts. In the past month, security forces foiled two infiltration attempts, including an operation in which two heavily armed terrorists from the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) were killed in the Poonch district.
The security audit followed a rise in infiltration attempts along the Jammu and Kashmir borders in the previous year, especially in the Jammu sector, which became more active compared to the Kashmir sector. Security agencies responded by reviewing vulnerabilities and plugging loopholes, leading to the reassessment and reorganization of force deployments.
The review meeting, which was attended by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Deka, DGP Nalin Prabhat, and Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, also addressed the role of narcotics in funding terrorism. Shah highlighted the importance of curbing the narco network, which is often linked to terrorist activities, and called for swift action against drug trafficking to disrupt terror funding.
The meeting also saw discussions about implementing new criminal laws more effectively. Shah stressed the need for appointments to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to ensure better enforcement.
This review comes on the heels of a deadly terror attack in Kulgam, south Kashmir, which resulted in the death of former soldier Manzoor Ahmad Wagay and injuries to his wife and niece. In response, Mr. Shah suggested that forces adopt a ruthless approach to dismantle the Over Ground Workers (OGW) network, which supports terrorism in the region.
Following the attack, state police launched a large-scale crackdown, detaining numerous individuals, and the state intelligence agency conducted raids in areas like Noorbagh as part of ongoing security operations.
The Home Minister’s review and directives reflect the government’s commitment to improving security and tackling the growing challenges posed by terrorism and infiltration in Jammu and Kashmir.
