PM Modi Lauds Indian Priest George Koovakad's Elevation as Cardinal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed immense pride and joy on Sunday as Indian priest George Jacob Koovakad was elevated to the rank of Cardinal in the Holy Roman Catholic Church by Pope Francis. This significant appointment brings the total number of Indian Cardinals to six, bolstering India’s representation at the Vatican.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi highlighted the significance of this achievement. “A matter of great joy and pride for India! Delighted at His Eminence George Jacob Koovakad being created a Cardinal of the Holy Roman Catholic Church by His Holiness Pope Francis. My best wishes for his future endeavours,” he wrote.

The Prime Minister praised Cardinal Koovakad for dedicating his life to the service of humanity as a devoted follower of Jesus Christ.

A Historic Ceremony at the Vatican

The elevation ceremony, known as a grand consistory, took place on Saturday at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. The event, attended by clergy and dignitaries worldwide, witnessed the induction of 21 new Cardinals, including Koovakad.

The proceedings began at 8:30 PM (IST) with a solemn procession of the Cardinal-designates to the altar. Pope Francis addressed the gathering, bestowing the ceremonial red cap, a gold ring, and an official certificate to the new Cardinals, accompanied by prayers and blessings.

India’s Growing Representation

Koovakad’s elevation is seen as a testament to his decades-long service and dedication to the Church. At 51, he joins the ranks of five other Indian Cardinals, further cementing India’s significant role within the global Catholic community.

The ceremony marks a proud moment for India, as Cardinal Koovakad’s appointment enhances the country’s influence in the Vatican and its representation in the Church’s global affairs.
