Mumbai Police File FIR Over Deepfake Video Targeting Aamir Khan

In response to a deepfake video featuring Bollywood star Aamir Khan endorsing a political party, Mumbai Police have taken legal action by registering an FIR against an unnamed individual. This incident highlights the growing concerns around digital manipulation and its potential misuse in spreading misinformation.

Following Aamir Khan’s denouncement of the fake video, an FIR was lodged at the Khar police station in Mumbai. The complaint, filed by Khan’s office, cited sections of the Indian Penal Code related to impersonation and cheating, along with provisions from the Information Technology Act.

The deepfake video, spanning 27 seconds, portrays Aamir Khan supposedly endorsing a political party while advising against empty rhetoric. The footage appears to be manipulated using artificial intelligence (AI) technology, with the actor’s image superimposed onto an older scene from his show, “Satyamev Jayate.”

A spokesperson for Aamir Khan clarified that the actor has never endorsed any political party throughout his extensive career spanning 35 years. Khan’s team expressed alarm over the circulation of the fake video, emphasizing its falsity and categorizing it as a deliberate attempt to mislead.

Despite the controversy surrounding the deepfake video, Aamir Khan has urged the public to actively participate in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, scheduled in seven phases from April 19 to June 1. He emphasized the importance of voting and being informed about the electoral process.

The registration of the FIR by Mumbai Police underscores the seriousness with which authorities are addressing the issue of deepfake content. This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges posed by digital manipulation and the need for vigilance in combating misinformation, especially during critical political periods.
