The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken a significant step in addressing the issues faced by villagers in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal, by creating a dedicated email ID, sandeshkhali@cbi.gov.in, for reporting instances of land grabbing and related crimes. This move comes in response to a directive from the Calcutta High Court for a court-monitored CBI probe into allegations of crimes against women and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali.
The Calcutta High Court, led by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam, has instructed the CBI to submit a comprehensive report on the Sandeshkhali case by the next hearing scheduled for May 2. Additionally, the court has mandated the installation of CCTV cameras in sensitive areas and LED street lights within Sandeshkhali, with the state government directed to provide necessary funds for these security measures.
A CBI spokesperson stated, “The District Magistrate, North 24 Parganas, has also been requested to give adequate publicity to the said email ID in the locality and issue a public notice in vernacular dailies with wide circulation in the area as per the Hon’ble High Court’s order.”
The court emphasized the need for an impartial inquiry to address various complaints and allegations swiftly, highlighting the importance of justice and fair play in the matter.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has welcomed the Calcutta High Court’s order, viewing it as a step towards providing justice to the victims. BJP’s national general secretary Tarun Chugh criticized the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, alleging indifference towards the plight of victims and suggesting a focus on protecting individuals like Shahjahan Sheikh, a key accused in sexual assault and land grab charges in Sandeshkhali.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) strongman Shahjahan Sheikh, who was arrested in February for an assault on Enforcement Directorate officials, has been suspended by the TMC. The court’s actions and the CBI’s proactive measures mark significant developments in addressing the challenges faced by Sandeshkhali’s residents, indicating a renewed focus on justice and accountability in the region.
