The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has recently issued an advisory cautioning citizens about fraudulent calls impersonating DoT officials. These calls threaten individuals with mobile number disconnection due to alleged involvement in illegal activities. Additionally, the advisory addresses WhatsApp calls from foreign mobile numbers, particularly those beginning with ’92,’ where scammers pretend to be government representatives to deceive people.
The Ministry of Communications released an official statement highlighting the deceptive tactics used by cybercriminals through such calls. The scammers aim to intimidate individuals and extract personal information for cybercrimes or financial fraud. The DoT emphasized that it does not authorize anyone to make such threatening calls on its behalf.
Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and refrain from sharing any personal information if they receive such suspicious calls. The advisory advises reporting such incidents to the cybercrime helpline number 1930 or visiting www.cybercrime.gov.in if they become victims of cybercrime or financial fraud.
Taking proactive measures, the DoT encourages citizens to utilize the ‘Know Your Mobile Connections’ feature on the Sanchar Saathi portal. This enables individuals to verify mobile connections under their name and report any unauthorized or unnecessary mobile connections.
By issuing this advisory, the DoT aims to prevent the misuse of telecom resources for cybercrimes and financial frauds, underscoring the importance of public awareness and vigilance in safeguarding against fraudulent activities.
