Indian Navy Rescues Hijacked Vessel MV Ruen, Earns Gratitude from Bulgarian Minister

The Indian Navy has once again demonstrated its prowess by successfully rescuing the hijacked vessel MV Ruen from Somali pirates, garnering appreciation from Bulgaria’s deputy prime minister and foreign affairs minister Mariya Gabriel. The vessel, which had Bulgarian nationals among its crew, was hijacked by pirates on December 14 last year.

In a post on X, Minister Gabriel expressed her gratitude to India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for their support and the great effort put into rescuing the vessel and its crew members, including seven Bulgarian nationals. This successful operation marks a significant achievement in maritime security and cooperation between India and Bulgaria.

The Indian Navy’s operation involved making 35 pirates surrender, ensuring the safe rescue of MV Ruen and its crew members. This incident also highlights the persistent threat of piracy in certain maritime regions and the crucial role played by naval forces in safeguarding international shipping routes.

Bulgaria’s foreign ministry is actively working to secure the speedy return of the rescued Bulgarian crew members, who were among a diverse crew that included nationals from Myanmar and Angola. The hijacking of MV Ruen marked a rare occurrence since 2017, underscoring the ongoing challenges posed by piracy in the region.

The Indian navy’s vigilance and swift action in tracking and rescuing MV Ruen reflect a commitment to maritime security and the protection of seafarers’ lives. This successful mission reinforces the strong ties and cooperation between India and Bulgaria in ensuring maritime safety and security.
