Ex-Professor GN Saibaba Demands Reinstatement and Compensation Following Acquittal

Former Delhi University professor G N Saibaba, recently acquitted by the Bombay High Court in a Maoist links case, is demanding reinstatement by the university and compensation for the lost years of service. Saibaba, who addressed a press conference after spending seven years in prison, expressed his desire to resume teaching, stating that he cannot live without it.

Saibaba’s termination from his position at DU’s Ram Lal Anand College in 2021 stemmed from his implication in the case. Despite his acquittal, he still feels the emotional toll of his imprisonment, noting that the experience continues to haunt him.

During his time in prison, Saibaba faced numerous challenges, including cramped living conditions and inadequate medical care for his deteriorating health. He emphasized the lack of accessibility for disabled individuals like himself in the prison system, highlighting the dire conditions he endured.

Reflecting on his ordeal, Saibaba lamented the stigma faced by his family and the personal sacrifices he made, including being unable to attend his mother’s funeral due to denial of bail.

Despite these hardships, Saibaba expressed gratitude to his lawyers, friends, and activists for their unwavering support throughout his legal battle. He highlighted the dedication of his legal team, including those who provided pro bono services despite facing personal repercussions for their involvement.

Saibaba’s demand for reinstatement and compensation underscores the ongoing struggle for justice and accountability in cases involving wrongful imprisonment and judicial persecution. As he seeks to reclaim his livelihood and dignity, his case serves as a reminder of the need for systemic reforms to prevent such injustices from recurring.
