Congress Suspends Ex-MLA Mewaram Jain Amid Viral Video Controversy and Ongoing Legal Battles

The Rajasthan Congress has suspended former Barmer MLA Mewaram Jain following the circulation of alleged obscene videos involving him on social media. This action comes amidst a series of controversies, including allegations of immoral conduct and ongoing legal battles.

Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasara announced the suspension, citing Mewaram Jain’s alleged involvement in activities deemed unethical, which contradicts the party’s constitution. Dotasara issued a statement, indicating that such actions by Mewaram Jain have breached the party’s disciplinary code.

The suspension follows grave accusations against Mewaram Jain, a three-time MLA from Barmer assembly seat, including allegations of his involvement in a gang rape case filed by a woman in Jodhpur on December 20, 2023. The woman accused Mewaram of wielding his influence as an MLA to hinder any legal actions against him and instead filed a case against her for sextortion.

Nine individuals, including Mewaram Jain, were implicated in the gang rape case registered at the Rajiv Gandhi Nagar police station in Jodhpur. The case also involved Barmer deputy superintendent of police Anand Singh Rajpurohi and other prominent figures, resulting in their arrests.

Despite the Rajasthan High Court granting a stay on Mewaram Jain’s arrest until January 25 and urging cooperation with the police investigation, the controversy deepened with the emergence of purported obscene videos purportedly featuring the ex-MLA.

Notably, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had initiated a case against Mewaram Jain last year, citing transactions amounting to approximately ₹5 crore. The ED’s probe also connected a transaction of ₹50 lakh to a blackmail case filed at Kotwali police station. The ED had summoned Mewaram for questioning, and despite legal back-and-forth, the investigation remains ongoing.

These series of legal entanglements and allegations have now led to Mewaram Jain’s suspension from the Congress, casting a cloud of controversy and legal scrutiny over the former MLA’s political career.
