Indian Air Force Chief Emphasizes Defence Export Potential to Global South

Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, Chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF), highlighted India’s burgeoning indigenous defence capabilities, signaling opportunities for collaborations and export potential in military systems with nations of the Global South. Speaking at the 20th Subroto Mukherjee seminar on India and the Global South, Chaudhari emphasized the export potential of fighter jets, combat helicopters, and missile systems.

Asserting the readiness to engage with countries of the Global South, Chaudhari identified platforms like the light combat aircraft, light combat helicopter, and Akash missile system as competitive and dependable options for these nations. He underscored their potential to bolster India’s economic and technological prowess while offering strategic solutions to partner air forces.

Chaudhari proposed the establishment of joint ventures, advocating mutual benefits through co-development of components, shared production facilities, and the creation of regional maintenance and support hubs. He highlighted key areas of focus, including capability development in global supply chains, establishing manufacturing hubs, and setting up maintenance and repair facilities.

Furthermore, the IAF chief emphasized joint research and development projects, defence innovation, and technological exchanges as crucial avenues for collaboration. He envisioned the IAF as a catalyst for progress, fostering strategic partnerships, and contributing to the collective advancement of the Global South.

Highlighting the IAF’s engagement with these nations, Chaudhari noted the air force’s extensive training of foreign trainees, aiming to enhance cooperation, interoperability, and trust. The IAF regularly conducts training programs, sharing operational and maintenance best practices with partner nations.

Acknowledging India’s proactive role in international forums, Chaudhari emphasized India’s advocacy for the interests of the Global South, citing instances where the country championed their concerns during its G-20 presidency.

Identifying contemporary security challenges faced by India and the Global South, the IAF chief stressed the need for collaborative defence strategies to address issues like terrorism, cyber threats, regional conflicts, and other shared concerns.

In conclusion, Chaudhari highlighted India’s rise as a prominent global player and emphasized the importance of understanding complex dynamics in navigating a future shaped by interconnectedness. He emphasized India’s emergence from colonial shadows, presenting a tapestry of challenges and opportunities on the global stage.
