Date:

In a historic win, Baryl Vanneihsangi emerged victorious in the recent Mizoram assembly elections, clinching the Aizawl South-III constituency seat and etching her name as the youngest woman Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in the state. Representing the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), Baryl secured an impressive victory with 9,370 votes, triumphing over the Mizo National Front’s (MNF) candidate F Lalnunmawia.

Here are five key aspects illuminating Baryl Vanneihsangi’s journey and accomplishments:

  1. Youthful Achievement: At 32 years old, Baryl stands as the youngest MLA in the Mizoram assembly, embodying a new generation of political leadership in the state.
  2. Political Experience: According to Election Commission records, Baryl previously served as a corporator in the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC), showcasing her prior political engagement before stepping into the state legislature.
  3. Educational Background: Baryl pursued her Masters of Arts from the North Eastern Hill University in Shillong, Meghalaya, reflecting her academic pursuits alongside her political endeavors. Furthermore, records indicate a clean slate regarding any criminal involvement.
  4. Diverse Career: Prior to her foray into politics, Baryl began her career as a renowned TV anchor, showcasing a diverse professional background before entering the political arena.

Baryl Vanneihsangi’s victory echoes a larger political shift in Mizoram, marked by the ZPM’s significant triumph in the 40-member assembly elections. The ZPM secured a resounding victory, attaining 27 seats and overturning the ruling MNF. Notably, the BJP clinched two seats out of the 23 contested, while the Congress managed to secure only one seat. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), debuting with four contesting seats, did not secure any victories.

Moreover, the recent elections witnessed a noteworthy milestone as three women candidates emerged victorious. Alongside Baryl Vanneihsangi’s win, Lalrinpuii from Aizawl South-III, Lunglei East’s Lalrinpuii, and Prova Chakma of the MNF also claimed victories. Remarkably, the previous Mizoram Assembly lacked any female MLAs, underscoring the significance of these wins in enhancing gender representation in the state’s political landscape.
