Smita Srivastava, a 46-year-old woman hailing from Uttar Pradesh, India, has captured global attention by clinching a prestigious Guinness World Records title for possessing the longest hair on a living individual. Her hair, untouched by scissors since the age of 14, has achieved a remarkable length, officially measured at an astounding 7 feet and 9 inches.
Ms. Srivastava’s journey towards this extraordinary accolade stemmed from her admiration for the iconic long hairstyles sported by Hindi actresses in the 1980s. Inspired by their elegance and cultural significance, she made a steadfast commitment to nurturing her hair, eventually earning her a place in the coveted Guinness World Records.
“In Indian culture, goddesses traditionally had very long hair. In our society, it is considered inauspicious to cut hair, so that is why women used to grow hair,” explained Smita, highlighting the cultural roots and beliefs underpinning her dedication. “Long hair enhances the beauty of women.”
The routine maintenance of her impressive locks is no small feat. According to Guinness World Records, Smita meticulously cares for her hair, washing it twice a week. This extensive process, involving washing, drying, detangling, and styling, consumes up to three hours on each occasion. She spends around 30 to 45 minutes for washing, followed by using a towel to dry it and then investing two hours for detangling it meticulously.
“I lay a sheet down on which I detangle my hair while standing on my bed,” shared Smita, shedding light on her unique method of handling her voluminous locks.
After detangling and drying, she combs her hair before braiding or tying it into a bun, ensuring it remains well-maintained.
Venturing outside with her flowing hair evokes astonishment among onlookers. Smita revealed that people are often taken aback by the extraordinary length, frequently approaching her, touching her hair, taking pictures, and expressing disbelief at its length.
“People come to me, touch my hair, take pictures, and take selfies with me, and they often inquire about the products I use, as my hair is beautiful,” said Smita, recounting the reactions she often encounters. “I tell them what I apply to my hair, and they express their intention to do the same to achieve healthy hair.”
Overflowing with joy and gratitude, Smita expressed that holding this Guinness World Records title was once just a dream. “God answered my prayers,” she jubilantly shared with Guinness World Records, signifying the fulfillment of her long-cherished aspiration.
