“Afghanistan Shuts New Delhi Embassy Amid Diplomatic Strain”

Afghanistan Shuts New Delhi Embassy, Citing Challenges in Bilateral Relations

In a significant development, the Afghanistan embassy in New Delhi has officially announced the permanent closure of its diplomatic mission, citing persistent challenges encountered in its operations within India. The closure, effective from November 23, 2023, comes after the embassy ceased its operations on September 30, hoping for a shift in the Indian government’s stance to allow normal operations.

Attributing the closure to challenges posed by the Indian government, the embassy’s official statement expressed a sense of disappointment, indicating that the decision is a consequence of broader policy changes and interests.

Addressing the Afghan citizens in India, the embassy extended gratitude for their support and understanding throughout its tenure. It noted a decline in the Afghan community within India over the past two years and three months, with refugees, students, and traders leaving the country. The statement highlighted a nearly halved number of Afghan citizens in India since August 2021, with limited new visas issued during this period.

The embassy emphasized its efforts in serving the Afghan community despite resource constraints, mentioning its commitment to transparency, accountability, and fair treatment based on historic ties and bilateral relations with India.

Expressing concern over attempts to tarnish their image and impede diplomatic efforts, the embassy highlighted the challenges faced in advocating for Afghan interests amidst the changing political landscape in Afghanistan.

Currently, there are no diplomats from the Afghan Republic in India, with the embassy confirming the safe relocation of previous diplomatic personnel to third countries. It noted the presence of diplomats affiliated with the Taliban attending online meetings, emphasizing that the responsibility of diplomats appointed by the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in India has officially concluded.

The embassy’s closure underscores the end of the Afghan Republic’s mission in India, prompting the Indian government to decide on the mission’s fate. The statement acknowledged historic events and current circumstances while extending gratitude to India for its support over the past 22 years.

This closure announcement follows the embassy’s previous notice on November 1, citing resource limitations and the failure to meet Afghanistan’s interests under the Taliban regime. Additionally, the embassy criticized certain consulates for aligning with an “illegitimate regime,” emphasizing the divergence from the objectives of a legitimate or elected government.

The closure marks a pivotal moment in bilateral relations between Afghanistan and India, prompting reflection on the evolving diplomatic landscape between the two nations.
