"India Abstains from UN Vote on Gaza Conflict Resolution, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Expresses Disappointment"

India abstained from voting in the UN General Assembly on a Jordanian-drafted resolution regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict, which called for an immediate humanitarian truce and unhindered humanitarian access in Gaza. The resolution, which was adopted by the General Assembly, received 121 votes in favor, 44 abstentions, and 14 member states voting against it. India abstained as the resolution did not mention the “terror attacks” carried out by Hamas. The resolution also did not mention Hamas. India’s position was that terrorism is a “malignancy” that knows no borders, nationality, or race, and the world should not entertain justifications for acts of terrorism.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, a Congress leader, expressed her shock and disappointment over India’s decision to abstain, stating that it goes against India’s principles of non-violence and truth. She emphasized that the principles of non-violence and truth are fundamental to India’s nationhood and have guided its actions as a member of the international community. Priyanka Gandhi called for India to take a stand and not remain silent while human rights and humanitarian laws are being violated in the conflict, leading to the suffering of innocent men, women, and children in Palestine.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza has resulted in a significant loss of life and suffering, with the Health Ministry in Gaza reporting more than 7,000 Palestinian casualties. Hamas initiated attacks on Israel, leading to a cycle of violence and retaliatory strikes. India’s decision to abstain from the resolution reflects its position on terrorism and its commitment to not endorsing any justification for acts of terror.
