Renowned gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari, who has long been at the center of criminal and political controversies, has been sentenced to a 10-year prison term by a local court in connection with a murder case. The former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) was convicted by the same court in a ruling that comes shortly after he was granted bail by the Allahabad High Court on September 25.
Mukhtar Ansari’s imprisonment is linked to the murder of police officer Kapildev Singh in 2009, marking a significant development in a longstanding legal battle. In the same year, Ansari faced additional allegations of attempting to murder another policeman, Mir Hasan. These legal challenges have kept him entangled in a complex web of cases and legal proceedings.
Notably, a Varanasi court had earlier handed Mukhtar Ansari a life sentence in June for his involvement in another murder case. This marked a crucial legal setback for the prominent politician who has wielded influence both in the criminal and political spheres.
In addition to his ongoing legal battles, the Enforcement Directorate initiated a money laundering investigation against Mukhtar Ansari, leading to the attachment of lands, a building, and bank deposits collectively valued at over ₹73.43 lakh on October 15.
Mukhtar Ansari’s controversial and tumultuous career in politics and crime includes his alleged role in the murder of a Congress leader in 1991. During his ascent in the political arena, Ansari was accused of orchestrating the murder of Congress leader Awadhesh Rai, who was shot dead outside the residence of former MLA Ajay Rai in August 1991. The case implicated Mukhtar Ansari and four others as accused, and it remains a significant part of his criminal history.
The gangster-politician currently faces more than 15 cases pending trial across the country, amounting to at least 61 criminal cases in his legal record. The police conducted an extensive investigation into the murder case, meticulously tracing the connections between gang leaders and the former MLA before moving forward with his arrest.
Mukhtar Ansari’s sentencing in the 2009 murder case underscores the ongoing legal battles that have defined his tumultuous and controversial career.
