In a massive rescue operation, authorities in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district have managed to save 32 Border Roads Organisation (BRO) workers who were trapped under snow after an avalanche struck the high-altitude village of Mana on Friday. However, 25 workers remain stranded as bad weather continues to hamper relief operations.
Avalanche Hits BRO Camp Near Badrinath
The avalanche buried a BRO camp located between Mana and Badrinath, trapping 57 workers under thick layers of snow. The incident occurred in a region that remains highly vulnerable to avalanches, especially during the winter months.
Challenges in Rescue Operations
Rescue teams faced multiple hurdles, including blocked roads, heavy snowfall, and continuous rain. The operation had to be paused due to the risk of further avalanches, with at least two mild ones reported after the initial disaster.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed that helicopters could not be deployed due to poor weather conditions. “Rescue mission is underway. Due to inclement weather, helicopter service cannot be used. We are trying to rescue the labourers. The offices of the PM and home minister are in touch with us,” he told ANI.
Authorities Mobilize Resources
A rescue team of 65 personnel, including disaster response teams and army units, has been deployed. Uttarakhand Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Suman noted that despite difficult conditions, efforts were ongoing to reach the remaining trapped workers. Those rescued have been admitted to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) hospital in Mana for treatment.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh Responds
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh expressed concern over the situation. “An unfortunate avalanche has occurred in the Mana area of Joshimath, impacting the GREF camp of BRO. Spoke to CM Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami regarding the situation. The administration is providing all possible assistance, and rescue efforts by local Army units are underway,” he wrote on X.
