India's Got Latent Controversy: Supreme Court Urges Centre to Regulate ‘Obscene Content’ on YouTube

In the wake of a controversy sparked by remarks made by YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, the Supreme Court of India has urged the government to take steps to regulate ‘obscene content’ on YouTube and other social media platforms. The Supreme Court’s comments came after a row over Allahbadia’s appearance on the show India’s Got Latent, where his remarks raised concerns about the misuse of digital platforms.

The Supreme Court was hearing a plea from Ranveer Allahbadia, who sought to combine multiple FIRs filed against him and requested interim relief from arrest. The case was brought to light after Allahbadia’s controversial comments during the India’s Got Latent show, which were widely criticized for their inappropriate nature.

While hearing the case, a bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh expressed their dismay over the growing misuse of social media platforms like YouTube. Justice Kant emphasized the need to address this “vacuum and barren area” in order to prevent further exploitation by so-called “YouTubers.” He made it clear that the court would not allow such behavior to continue unchecked, and stressed that the issue must be tackled with seriousness.

The Supreme Court further directed Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati to consult the Attorney General and Solicitor General for assistance in the matter. Justice Kant urged the government to take prompt action, given the sensitivity of the issue.

During the proceedings, the bench strongly criticized Allahbadia’s comments, labeling them as “deeply shameful.” The court stated that the remarks showed a “dirty” mindset, and expressed that Allahbadia’s parents and society at large would be ashamed of his behavior. The bench made it clear that such content is unacceptable and could have far-reaching consequences if left unchecked.

The Supreme Court’s intervention has put the spotlight on the issue of regulating content on social media platforms, urging the government to take a firmer stance in the face of growing concerns about online abuse and inappropriate material.

The case is still ongoing, with the Supreme Court planning to revisit the issue at its next hearing. As of now, the government has yet to announce any formal steps toward regulating content on platforms like YouTube. The matter has sparked a larger debate about the role of social media in shaping public discourse and the need for stricter oversight.
