In a significant milestone for Jammu and Kashmir’s rail connectivity, Indian Railways successfully conducted the trial run of the specially designed Vande Bharat Express train on Saturday. The train journeyed from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) railway station to Srinagar railway station, crossing the iconic Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest rail bridge, and the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge.
The train made a brief stop at Jammu station around 11:30 AM, where it was greeted with enthusiasm and applause for the Indian Railways. It then proceeded to Budgam station, completing its trial run. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to flag off the train’s commercial operations from Katra in the near future, though the exact date is yet to be announced.
Special Features of the Train
The Vande Bharat Express operating in Jammu and Kashmir has been uniquely designed to handle the region’s challenging winter conditions. Some of its specialized features include:
- Advanced heating systems to prevent freezing of water and bio-toilet tanks.
- Heating mechanisms for vacuum systems and air-brake systems, ensuring smooth operations in sub-zero temperatures.
- Embedded heating elements in the windshield to defrost the driver’s front glass, enhancing visibility in harsh winter conditions.
In addition to these enhancements, the train also retains the amenities of other Vande Bharat Express models, including fully air-conditioned coaches, automatic plug doors, and mobile charging sockets.
A Step Toward Improved Connectivity
The trial run of the Vande Bharat Express is a key development in the completion of the 272-km USBRL (Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link) project, which aims to connect the Kashmir Valley to the broader Indian Railway network. This project is seen as a crucial effort to bridge geographical and economic gaps in the region.
Officials noted that the train is a symbol of India’s commitment to overcoming infrastructure challenges and fostering integration.
The Vande Bharat Express is expected to revolutionize rail travel in the region, offering faster, more comfortable, and reliable transportation while enhancing economic and cultural connectivity.
