A massive fire broke out at the Maha Kumbh Mela venue in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, after two gas cylinders exploded inside a tent. The blaze rapidly spread to 18 surrounding tents, consuming them entirely. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries from the incident.
Firefighters stationed at the venue as part of the event’s safety arrangements responded quickly. They rushed to the affected area and managed to bring the fire under control. Authorities also evacuated nearby tents to ensure the safety of the people in the area.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to inquire about the situation. In response, CM Yogi Adityanath dispatched senior officials to the site to assess the damage and oversee the ongoing relief operations.
According to Bhaskar Mishra, the in-charge of Akhara Police Station, the fire was caused by two gas cylinders that exploded in Sector 19 of the Maha Kumbh Mela, triggering the blaze. Local police and fire personnel worked in tandem to control the fire and prevent it from spreading further.
The official X account of the Maha Kumbh Mela organizers expressed sorrow over the incident. “Very sad. The fire incident at Maha Kumbh has shocked everyone. The administration is ensuring immediate relief and rescue operations. We pray to Maa Ganga for everyone’s safety,” the tweet read.
The 45-day Maha Kumbh Mela, which began on January 13, has seen a significant turnout, with over 7.72 crore people having participated in the holy dip. On Sunday alone, more than 46.95 lakh devotees took part in the ritual, according to official data.
The authorities continue to provide support and ensure that safety measures are in place, as the event continues to attract millions of devotees from across the country.
