The Punjab bandh called by farmers on Monday caused widespread disruptions in neighboring Haryana, affecting major roadways and train services. The protest, centered on the Ambala-Chandigarh expressway at the Dappar toll plaza near Gholu Majra village in Dera Bassi town, began early in the morning, blocking traffic on the critical Chandigarh-Delhi highway.
Traffic Diversions Announced
In response to the blockade, the Ambala police issued a traffic advisory for commuters traveling on routes such as Chandigarh-Delhi, Hisar-Chandigarh, and Ambala-Chandigarh. Travelers were advised to take alternative routes via Panchkula, Barwala, Mullana, Yamunanagar, Radaur, and Ladwa to reconnect with National Highway-44 at Pipli or Karnal.
Rail Services Severely Affected
The bandh also led to the blockade of the Ambala-Chandigarh rail section near Lalru station in Mohali district. This caused the cancellation of several prominent train services, including:
- Kalka-New Delhi Shatabdi Express (12006)
- Chandigarh-New Delhi Shatabdi Express (12046)
- New Delhi-Amb Andaura Vande Bharat Express (22447/48)
The Ajmer-Chandigarh-Ajmer Vande Bharat Express (20977/78) was terminated at Delhi Cantt station, while the Daulatpur Chowk-New Delhi Jan Shatabdi Express (12058) was short-originated at Ambala Cantt.
Northern Railways reported that 221 trains were impacted, including 150 cancellations across the Delhi, Ambala, and Ferozepur divisions. Trains operating in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh were particularly affected.
Further Disruptions and Passenger Inconvenience
Ambala division officials confirmed that no train was operating beyond Ambala Cantt due to the blockades at Lalru and Shambhu stations. Many trains were short-terminated or rescheduled, leaving passengers stranded in cold weather with significant delays.
The railways took the following measures:
- Seven trains partially cancelled
- 14 trains regulated
- 13 trains rescheduled
- 15 trains short-originated
- 22 trains short-terminated
Widespread Impact
The bandh underscored the broader disruptions caused by the farmers’ protests in Punjab and adjoining states. Officials and authorities are working to restore normalcy while ensuring minimal inconvenience to travelers.
Passengers are advised to check the status of their trains and routes before traveling to avoid further inconvenience.
