A chilling video from Himachal Pradesh’s Manali has surfaced, showing a truck slipping on an icy road and plunging into the Solang Valley. The incident highlights the dangers of navigating snow-covered mountain roads as the state grapples with heavy snowfall this winter.
The video captures the truck skidding uncontrollably on a snowy road amidst heavy snowfall. In a desperate attempt to avoid tragedy, the driver jumped out of the moving vehicle just moments before it fell into the valley. While he tried to stop the truck initially, icy conditions caused him to lose balance as well.
This is not an isolated incident. Earlier this month, a Mahindra Thar also skidded off a snow-laden road near the Atal Tunnel, which connects Manali to the Lahaul-Spiti Valley. The driver in that case also managed to escape by jumping out in time.
The latest spell of heavy snowfall in Manali has created a picturesque winter wonderland but has also led to significant challenges for locals and tourists. Earlier this week, around 1,000 vehicles were stranded for hours between Solang and the Atal Tunnel due to snow-covered roads. The Kullu police launched a massive rescue operation and successfully evacuated about 5,000 tourists.
“Due to fresh snowfall, about 1,000 tourists and other vehicles were stuck in Solang Nala. There were about 5,000 tourists in these vehicles. The vehicles and tourists have been rescued by Kullu Police and taken to safe places. The rescue operation is still ongoing,” the police said in a statement on X.
The heavy snowfall has caused widespread disruption across Himachal Pradesh. Over 200 roads, including three national highways, remain closed, with Shimla, Lahaul-Spiti, and Kullu among the worst-affected districts. Power outages have also been reported, with more than 170 transformers disrupted, further complicating life for residents.
Authorities have urged travelers to avoid venturing into snow-affected regions and to prioritize safety as rescue and snow-clearance operations continue.
