Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kuwait on Saturday for a two-day official visit, marking a significant moment in strengthening the diplomatic and economic ties between India and Kuwait. Invited by Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, PM Modi’s visit is the first by an Indian Prime Minister since Indira Gandhi’s trip in 1981.
During his stay, PM Modi will hold bilateral talks with the Kuwaiti leadership, focusing on enhancing defence and security cooperation. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that discussions are underway to finalize a bilateral investment treaty and a defence cooperation agreement, highlighting the importance of fortifying strategic and economic relations between the two nations.
“India and Kuwait share a historical connection that has been nurtured over generations. This visit is a chance to outline a roadmap for a futuristic partnership that will benefit both countries and contribute to regional peace, stability, and prosperity,” PM Modi remarked before his departure.
The Prime Minister’s talks with the Amir, the Crown Prince, and the Prime Minister of Kuwait are expected to delve into avenues for further cooperation. In addition to defence and security, discussions are expected to touch upon trade relations, energy cooperation, and the Indian diaspora in Kuwait.
India has long been one of Kuwait’s top trading partners, with Indian expats constituting 30 percent of the country’s workforce. Indian nationals play a dominant role in the private and domestic sectors, making their contribution vital to Kuwait’s economy.
As the chair of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Kuwait plays a central role in regional matters. PM Modi’s visit is poised to bolster India’s ties not only with Kuwait but also with the broader Gulf region, where India has a significant strategic and economic interest.
This visit underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its relationships with key Gulf nations, aligning with PM Modi’s broader vision of regional cooperation and peace in West Asia. The two-day visit is expected to lay the foundation for long-term partnerships between India and Kuwait in multiple sectors.
