Man Electrocuted Outside Flooded ATM in Chennai Amid Cyclone Fengal Preparations

In a tragic incident highlighting the perils of severe weather, a man was found dead outside a flooded ATM in Chennai, likely electrocuted amid waterlogging caused by heavy rainfall. The city has been grappling with incessant rain ahead of Cyclone Fengal, which is expected to make landfall this evening.

Disturbing footage from the scene shows the man’s body floating in floodwaters, with locals using a wooden pole to confirm the victim’s status before pulling him out. The deceased, whose identity remains unknown, is suspected to have come into contact with a live electrical current. Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances of his death.

Cyclone Fengal’s Impact

The approaching Cyclone Fengal has already caused significant disruption in Chennai. Chennai International Airport has been shut until 7 PM as a precautionary measure, and waterlogging has been reported across the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Kallakurichi, and Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu, as well as Puducherry.

The storm has already left a trail of devastation, skirting Sri Lanka earlier this week and claiming 12 lives, including six children.

Climate Change and Intensifying Storms

Experts warn that the intensity of storms like Fengal is escalating due to climate change. Rising global temperatures, driven by the continued burning of fossil fuels, contribute to more powerful and destructive weather events.

Authorities are urging residents to stay indoors and avoid venturing into flooded areas to prevent further casualties.
