The Uttar Pradesh Police have intensified their crackdown on communal violence in Maharajganj, with a total of 87 individuals arrested following the unrest that erupted earlier this week. On Friday, authorities arrested an additional 26 suspected rioters, bringing the total number of detainees from both communities to this significant figure.
Tight security measures have been implemented across the district, particularly around mosques during Friday prayers. By the evening, normal activity and movement resumed in most markets, except in Maharajganj, which remains the epicenter of the violence.
The turmoil began after Ram Gopal Mishra, a 22-year-old, died from gunshot injuries stemming from an inter-faith dispute regarding loud music played outside a place of worship in Maharajganj on Sunday. This incident triggered a wave of communal violence, including incidents of arson and vandalism. The local administration responded by suspending internet services for four days, prompting many residents to remain indoors during this period.
According to police reports, as of Friday, a total of 11 First Information Reports (FIRs) had been registered in connection with Mishra’s killing and the subsequent violence, with cases opened against around 1,000 individuals, including six specifically named suspects. The arrests are part of the ongoing investigation into these disturbances.
In response to the violence, several police officials have faced disciplinary actions. A station house officer (SHO) and a police outpost in-charge have been suspended. Additionally, Circle Officer Rupendra Gaur, Tehsildar Ravikant Dwivedi, and District Information Officer Ghulam Waris Siddiqui have also been removed from their positions.
