PM Narendra Modi Meets Ukraine's Zelensky in New York, Reaffirms Peace Support

During his three-day visit to the United States, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a significant bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in New York on Monday, marking their second engagement in just a month. The meeting underscored India’s ongoing commitment to assisting in efforts aimed at achieving a swift resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Modi’s visit to the US included a series of high-profile events, notably the Quad Leaders’ Summit held in Wilmington on Saturday. The summit brought together leaders from the United States, India, Japan, and Australia to discuss regional security and cooperation. On Sunday, Modi addressed a large gathering of the Indian-American community in Long Island, highlighting the importance of the Indian diaspora in the United States.

In a message on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi expressed his dedication to implementing the outcomes of his recent visit to Ukraine, stating, “Met President @ZelenskyyUa in New York. We are committed to implementing the outcomes of my visit to Ukraine last month to strengthen bilateral relations. Reiterated India’s support for early resolution of the conflict in Ukraine and restoration of peace and stability.”

Modi’s historic visit to Ukraine in August was particularly noteworthy, as it was the first time an Indian Prime Minister visited the country since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992. The joint statement issued following his visit indicated a mutual desire to elevate bilateral ties from a comprehensive partnership to a strategic one, enhancing cooperation across various sectors.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of strengthening their relationship, focusing on mutual trust, respect, and open dialogue to benefit their nations’ citizens. The meeting between Modi and Zelensky highlights India’s proactive approach in international diplomacy and its role in promoting peace and stability in conflict-affected regions.

Furthermore, the Quad leaders, in a joint statement after their meeting on September 21, reaffirmed their commitment to upholding international law and the principles of the UN Charter, including the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all states, alongside advocating for peaceful resolutions to disputes.

As Modi continues his engagements in the US, his discussions with global leaders signal India’s intent to play a pivotal role on the international stage, fostering diplomatic relationships that contribute to global peace and security.
