Gurugram Man's Wrong-Side Driving Kills Biker, Claims He "Wanted to Save Time"

A 22-year-old biker, Akshat Garg, tragically lost his life in a head-on collision with a car being driven on the wrong side of the road in Gurugram’s DLF Phase-II. The driver, operating a Mahindra XUV 3OO, reportedly told police that he was “trying to save time” by driving on the opposite side of the Golf Course Road. The fatal incident, which occurred last Sunday, was captured on a GoPro camera mounted on one of the victim’s friends.

Akshat Garg, a resident of Dwarka, worked at a private company and had gone for a motorcycle ride with friends on the day of the accident. The impact of the crash threw him from the bike, and he fell behind the car. Despite efforts to rush him to the hospital, Garg succumbed to his injuries.

His grieving mother expressed frustration over the handling of the case, questioning why the accused was released on bail. “My son has gone, but he [the accused] slept peacefully that night,” she lamented. “I want justice for my son. A person in the wrong killed my son.”

Police Response

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Vikas Kaushik, speaking to ANI, said, “The Gurugram police stands with the victim’s family. We will take whatever action is needed under the law.” He confirmed that the accused admitted to driving on the wrong side of the road to “save time.” However, Kaushik emphasized, “No point can justify driving on the wrong side.”

Allegations of Special Treatment

The Gurugram police have faced criticism from the public and the victim’s family over alleged “special treatment” being given to the driver. In response, ACP Kaushik denied these allegations, stating, “There is no question of giving special treatment or concession to anyone. We investigate such cases according to standard operating procedures (SOPs), and no one receives preferential treatment.”

Kaushik urged the family to meet with the police if they had any concerns, promising transparency and an independent investigation. “We will show them the files and explain the procedures to satisfy their concerns about the investigation,” he added.
