“Former Kolkata Hospital Head Facing Non-Bailable Corruption Charges”

vNon-Bailable Charges Filed Against Former Kolkata Hospital Chief in Corruption Case

Non-bailable charges have been brought against Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, in a significant corruption case. This development follows an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), prompted by orders from the Calcutta High Court.

The case against Ghosh, who has been embroiled in controversy over the rape-murder of a young doctor at the hospital, has escalated due to severe allegations of financial misconduct. Although Ghosh has not been implicated in the rape-murder case, the corruption charges he faces are non-bailable, meaning that his release on bail is unlikely once he is arrested.

The CBI’s intervention came after an appeal from former Deputy Superintendent Akhtar Ali, who had initially leveled the corruption allegations. The timing of the corruption investigation has been linked to the public outrage surrounding the rape-murder case, raising questions about possible connections between the two issues.

Protests erupted following the tragic incident, prompting Ali to request the Enforcement Directorate to probe the alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College under Ghosh’s administration. Allegations against Ghosh include the illegal sale of unclaimed corpses, trafficking of biomedical waste, and manipulation of tenders for personal gain. It is also claimed that students were coerced into paying bribes ranging from ₹5 to ₹8 lakh to pass exams.

The CBI conducted an extensive 11-hour search at Ghosh’s residence, uncovering a substantial amount of evidence. Ghosh has been under intense scrutiny, including a polygraph test, and was questioned for ten consecutive days regarding the financial allegations.
