India Ready to Collaborate with Allies for Peace in Ukraine and West Asia: Modi

In a significant statement ahead of his visit to Kyiv, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed India’s readiness to collaborate with friendly nations to support the restoration of peace and stability in Ukraine and West Asia. Modi’s remarks came during a media interaction following talks with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Warsaw.

Modi emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving conflicts, asserting that “no problem can be solved on the battlefield.” He highlighted the dire humanitarian consequences of ongoing conflicts, noting that the loss of innocent lives is a grave challenge for humanity. “We support dialogue and diplomacy for the early restoration of peace and stability. For this, India, along with friendly countries, is ready to provide all possible support,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister’s statements reflect India’s stance on global conflicts, as he prepares to visit Kyiv on Friday to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Modi’s visit to Ukraine is seen as a potentially historic step towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk welcomed Modi’s commitment, viewing it as a significant move towards a peace process. “I am very glad that [Modi] has confirmed his readiness for personal involvement in achieving a peaceful, just, and swift end to the war. We are both convinced that India can play a very important and positive role here,” Tusk said.

Poland has been a strong supporter of Ukraine, providing military aid and hosting millions of Ukrainian refugees, driven by concerns over the implications of a potential Russian victory. Modi’s visit to Kyiv follows his engagements in Poland and is part of India’s broader strategy to contribute to global peace efforts.

India has maintained a cautious position on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, abstaining or voting against many Ukraine-related resolutions at the United Nations. Despite criticism from the West, India has continued to purchase discounted Russian oil and fertilisers, while advocating for a return to dialogue and diplomacy.

Ukraine has encouraged India to play a more prominent role in peace efforts due to its strategic position and its voice in the Global South. The Ukrainian side has indicated that Zelenskyy’s peace formula will be a key topic during Modi’s visit.

As Modi prepares to engage with both Polish and Ukrainian leaders, his approach underscores India’s commitment to a peaceful resolution of international conflicts and its readiness to work with global partners to address crises.
