Violence Erupts in Badlapur Over Sexual Assault Cases; 72 Arrested, Internet Suspended

In Badlapur, Maharashtra, violence erupted following a massive protest over alleged sexual abuse of two kindergarten girls, leading to 72 arrests and a suspension of internet services. The town’s situation remains tense but is gradually returning to normal.

On Tuesday, protests in Badlapur turned violent as thousands of demonstrators blocked railway tracks and stormed a school where the abuse allegedly occurred. The protests were triggered by accusations against a school sweeper who reportedly sexually abused two young girls. The angry mob engaged in stone-pelting, targeting both city police and railway personnel. This violence resulted in injuries to at least 17 city police officers and around eight railway officers.

The unrest led to significant disruptions, with protesters vandalizing the school building and clashing with police. Authorities responded with a crackdown, including the deployment of additional police forces and the use of tear gas to disperse the crowd. The protestors also blocked train services, leading to a temporary halt in railway operations.

In response to the violence, the local administration imposed a suspension of internet services in Badlapur to prevent the spread of misinformation and further unrest. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sudhakar Pathare confirmed that internet services would be restored after a thorough review of the situation. The authorities have also registered multiple FIRs against the troublemakers involved in the violent incidents.

The situation prompted the suspension of several school officials, including the principal and a class teacher, while three police officials were suspended for alleged lapses in duty related to the handling of the abuse case. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the formation of a special investigation team led by senior IPS officer Arti Singh to expedite the probe. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde assured that the case would be fast-tracked and those responsible would be held accountable.

Senior lawyer Ujjwal Nikam, appointed as the special public prosecutor in the case, criticized the police for their delayed response. He emphasized the importance of prompt action in such sensitive cases to preserve crucial evidence and ensure justice.

The violent protests in Badlapur highlight ongoing tensions and concerns about the handling of sexual abuse cases and the response of local authorities. The town is currently under heavy police surveillance, and efforts are being made to restore normalcy.
