Over 7,200 Indian Students Return Amid Unrest in Bangladesh, Says Government

In response to the escalating situation in Bangladesh, more than 7,200 Indian students have been evacuated back to India over the past two weeks, ending August 1, according to information provided to the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh confirmed that this significant repatriation began on July 18, 2024.

Singh reported that there are currently about 19,000 Indian citizens residing in Bangladesh, including over 9,000 students. The Indian High Commission in Dhaka and its Assistant High Commissions in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet, and Khulna have been actively involved in facilitating the safe return of Indian nationals. The Ministry of External Affairs has been coordinating with Indian authorities to ensure a smooth process at land ports and airports.

The students evacuated hail from various Indian states including Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Tripura, and Assam. The Indian missions in Bangladesh are working closely with local authorities to ensure the safety and security of these individuals during their stay and transit.

In addition to addressing the situation in Bangladesh, Singh provided updates on other international matters. He stated that Indian student enrollment in Canadian universities has actually increased over the past three years, despite concerns about strained relations between the two countries. The figures for Indian students in Canada were 216,360, 318,380, and 427,085 over the last three years, respectively.

Regarding China’s growing influence in India’s neighboring countries, Singh assured that the Indian government remains vigilant. He emphasized that India’s “Neighbourhood First Policy” aims to maintain strong and independent relationships with its neighbors while monitoring external influences.

On the Israel-Palestine conflict, Singh reiterated India’s condemnation of the terror attacks on Israel and the loss of civilian lives. India has called for a ceasefire and ongoing humanitarian assistance for Gaza, and has provided 70 tonnes of aid, including medicines and medical supplies.
