The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has taken a strong stance against its own party leader and West Bengal’s Jail Minister, Akhil Giri, demanding his resignation following his recent misconduct with a female officer. The call for Giri’s resignation comes in the wake of a widely circulated video that shows him threatening the officer during an eviction drive in Tajpur, East Midnapore district.
In a stern response to the controversy, TMC leadership has instructed Giri to offer an unconditional apology to the officer and submit his resignation immediately. The party’s action reflects its commitment to addressing issues of misconduct and maintaining its principles of accountability and respect.
Trinamool Congress state chief Subrata Bakshi communicated the party’s decision to Giri directly, underscoring the gravity of the situation. Party spokesperson Dr. Santanu Sen elaborated on the measures taken, stating, “Yesterday our minister misbehaved with a lady forest officer, and we clarified immediately that we do not support such behavior… Our Forests Minister Birbaha Hansda has also spoken to the officer. Today, on the instructions of the party, our state president Subrata Bakshi has spoken to Akhil Giri on the telephone and directed him to seek the officer’s forgiveness and send his resignation to the party.”
Sen also criticized opposition parties, saying, “What is to be noted here is that the Trinamool Congress follows Raj Dharma and only the Trinamool Congress can take such action as a party. Anti-women BJP will never be able to take such a step. And in the past, the CPM which has also indulged in anti-women actions will not be able to follow such Raj Dharma.”
The incident has sparked significant public outrage, further exacerbating tensions between the ruling TMC and opposition parties. The BJP has seized upon the opportunity to criticize the TMC, demanding Giri’s immediate resignation and highlighting what they perceive as a lack of accountability within the ruling party.
Akhil Giri, known for his controversial remarks in the past, including an instance where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had to apologize on his behalf, faces mounting pressure to address the latest scandal. The Trinamool Congress, in its bid to distance itself from the controversy and reinforce its stance on proper conduct, has taken decisive action to address the minister’s behavior.
