The Indian Air Force (IAF) has reported a significant success in a recent test of its Sudarshan S-400 air defence missile system, which successfully neutralized 80% of an ‘enemy’ fighter aircraft package during an exercise. The exercise was conducted to demonstrate the full integration of the S-400 system into the IAF’s air defence capabilities.
The test, carried out in a designated theatre where one of the IAF’s S-400 squadrons is stationed, showcased the system’s effectiveness in countering aerial threats. The exercise involved real fighter aircraft, which were used to simulate an attack scenario. The Sudarshan S-400 system, named after the divine Sudarshan chakra of Lord Krishna, was able to ‘shoot down’ a substantial portion of the simulated enemy aircraft. The remaining aircraft were either forced to retreat or abort their missions, preventing them from reaching their intended targets.
The S-400 system, a long-range air defence missile system, has been integrated into the IAF’s arsenal with three squadrons already inducted. An additional two squadrons are anticipated to be delivered by 2026. The Indian government has also requested that Russia expedite the delivery of these systems, following a high-level visit to Moscow. The procurement of the S-400 is part of a larger defense deal valued at over ₹35,000 crore.
In recent years, the IAF has made significant strides in enhancing its air defence capabilities. The acquisition of the S-400 system, along with indigenous missile systems like the MR-SAM and Akash, as well as the Israeli Spyder quick reaction surface-to-air missile systems, is expected to be a game changer for India’s air defence.
The successful test of the S-400 comes amid heightened military activity along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), where both India and China have deployed extensive air defence systems. The IAF’s recent upgrades are seen as a crucial step in bolstering India’s defense capabilities in the region.
The Indian Defence Acquisition Council has also recently approved the procurement of the Indian Long Range Surface Air Missile System under Project Kusha, further strengthening the country’s air defence infrastructure.
This successful demonstration of the Sudarshan S-400’s capabilities underscores the IAF’s commitment to maintaining a robust air defence posture and its readiness to counter aerial threats effectively.
