Assam Floods: PM Modi Assures Support Amidst Devastation

In the wake of severe flooding across Assam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached out to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, pledging full cooperation from the central government to tackle the ongoing crisis. The northeastern state has been grappling with a relentless onslaught of floods, storms, and landslides, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

As per reports from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ADMA), the calamity has affected over 2,62,000 people and claimed the lives of 44 individuals this year alone. Chief Minister Sarma conveyed to Prime Minister Modi that Assam is currently facing a second wave of floods, exacerbated by heavy rains in Arunachal Pradesh and upper Assam districts.

In response to the dire situation, Prime Minister Modi assured Sarma of complete assistance from the Government of India. The conversation between the leaders underscored the urgent need for coordinated relief efforts as the state continues to grapple with the aftermath of natural disasters.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who also spoke with Chief Minister Sarma, emphasized the necessity of swift action and directed efforts toward the worst-affected districts such as Dibrugarh and Tinsukia. Rescue operations are underway, involving multiple agencies including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local administrations.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a “red alert” for several northeastern states, including Assam, with predictions of extremely heavy rainfall over the coming days. This active phase of the monsoon poses additional challenges and risks of further flooding and landslides in the region.

With at least 671 villages and 36 revenue circles impacted, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of affected populations and providing essential relief measures. Authorities are working tirelessly to mitigate the immediate impacts of the disaster and support those affected by these devastating natural calamities.
