The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has intervened in response to a disturbing incident in West Bengal where a man and a woman were publicly beaten for allegedly having an illicit relationship. The incident, captured in a widely circulated video, reportedly involved a perpetrator associated with the ruling Trinamool Congress party.
In a significant move, the NHRC has directed the state police chief and the Chief Secretary to submit a comprehensive report within a week. The commission has also announced plans to conduct its own on-the-spot inquiry into the matter.
“The matter indicates that the state authorities have not learnt any lessons from such incidents in the past nor the concerns raised by the NHRC,” stated the commission in a press release.
The directive specifies that the report should include details on the police investigation status, the victims’ health condition, and any medical treatment provided to them.
According to media reports, the incident unfolded after allegations of a love affair between the victims were discussed in a local meeting (Panchayat), following which the victims were subjected to severe physical assault in the presence of onlookers.
“This is not an isolated incident of lawlessness victimizing innocent people, especially women,” remarked the NHRC, highlighting previous incidents in Sandeshkhali which also drew its attention due to similar instances of violence against women.
In response to the controversy, political tensions have escalated in Bengal, with the BJP criticizing the state administration led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for failing to curb crimes against women.
Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress has condemned the incident, vowing severe punishment for the accused irrespective of his political affiliations.
“It is a heinous crime. The Trinamool Congress doesn’t want to know who this guy is or what his political affiliations are. Whoever this guy is, the police are looking for him. The strictest arm of the law will be meted out to him. He will not be spared. He will be made an example as soon as he gets caught,” stated Trinamool spokesperson Riju Dutta.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice, highlighting ongoing challenges in maintaining law and order in the region despite assurances from political leaders.
