“Rajasthan’s Sikar Shaken by 3.9 Magnitude Earthquake”

Date:

Magnitude 3.9 Earthquake Hits Rajasthan's Sikar; No Injuries or Damages Reported

A 3.9 magnitude earthquake struck Rajasthan’s Sikar on Saturday at 11:47 pm, as reported by the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The earthquake occurred at a depth of 5km, with coordinates 27.41 N latitude and 75.06 E longitude. Fortunately, no injuries or damages have been reported yet.

The NCS shared the details of the earthquake on their social media, stating, “EQ of M: 3.9, On: 08/06/2024 23:47:16 IST, Lat: 27.41 N, Long: 75.06 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Sikar, Rajasthan.” The National Center for Seismology is the primary agency monitoring earthquake activity in the country under the Earth Sciences ministry.

This recent seismic event follows a similar 3.9 magnitude earthquake that hit Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra last week, also causing no damage due to its depth of 10 km. In June, a 3.5 magnitude earthquake was reported in Chandel, Manipur, with the epicentre at Latitude 23.9 N and Longitude 94.10 E, at a depth of 77 kilometres.

The Himalayan region, including areas like Uttarakhand, experiences frequent seismic activity due to the collision of tectonic plates. Uttarakhand, known for its high seismic activity, falls under Seismic Zones IV and V. In May, earthquakes of magnitudes 3.1 and 2.8 struck Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand.

In April, a magnitude 4.2 earthquake hit the Bay of Bengal region with its epicentre located at Latitude 8.96 and Longitude 91.91, at a depth of 10 kilometres. These seismic events highlight the ongoing geological activity in various parts of India, prompting continued vigilance and preparedness for natural disasters.
